The release of a suspect, who was found in possession of stolen goods in Brookdale at the dawn of Thursday morning, 15 August, from police custody has sparked outrage among the community of Phoenix who are calling on law enforcement to act on rising crime in the area.

According to reports, the suspect was released back to society due to a lack of a complainant. Corinne Naicker, a Brookdale resident, expressed her alarm to the Phoenix Tabloid, stating that the increase in criminal activities in the area has become worrisome.

“These criminals do not care whose property they break into; as long as they can get their hands on something they can sell and they are fine with it. The situation has become so severe that residents on my street have installed extra security measures to prevent criminals from entering our roads and peering into our properties at night. It is baffling, to catch one of these criminals with multiple stolen items and then let him go. I do not understand how this can happen. What is the logic behind that? KZN VIP has made numerous attempts to get these criminals off the streets; the same incident occurred in Old Phoenix recently, yet no arrests were made. Something needs to be done. We cannot work hard only to have criminals steal our possessions and profit from them,” said Naicker.

Gareth Naidoo, spokesperson for KZN VIP, reported that during a patrol, members observed three suspicious males carrying large, heavy bags. “When additional support vehicles arrived, the suspects noticed and began to flee. A foot chase ensued, resulting in the apprehension of one suspect, while the other two managed to escape. In the bags, authorities found various household items including meat, electrical appliances, and sealed non-perishable goods as well as burglary tools such as a crowbar,” said Naidoo.

He added that the suspect claimed to have picked up the items from a friend’s home but could not provide details for verification. “The goods were suspected to be stolen, prompting SAPS involvement. Unfortunately, SAPS officials stated that, due to the lack of a complainant, no case could be opened, and the suspect was released. All items in the suspect’s possession were confiscated by SAPS,” said Naidoo.

KZN VIP later reported that an Islamic Centre had been broken into, with hampers and meat intended for public distribution stolen. The incident raised concerns among residents about their property being targeted next.

Several residents voiced their concerns on social media, questioning why a case was not opened. On Facebook, Nabeela Hoosen said:  “Firstly, I think it’s ridiculous that the suspect had household items with him, yet no arrest was made and no case was opened. Secondly, if no case was opened, why were the household items taken from the suspects? These items should only be confiscated as evidence if a case is opened. It looks like we have corrupt officers trying to benefit from the situation. It’s sad that those who are supposed to protect the community and act in its best interest are more concerned with their own gain. It’s truly disappointing.”

Phoenix SAPS was contacted for comment but no response was received at the time of printing.
