Protecting vulnerable children and raising awareness was the main agenda for non-profit organisation, the ReStory Foundation, during a recent talk. In collaboration with Inanda SAPS, iCare, Lifeline and the Department of Health, the talk visited Bhambayi and surrounding areas.
ReStory Foundation founder, Mandy Pearson, said educators and pupils were educated on the pressing issue of sexual assault and strategies for safeguarding children. She said: “Key in the presentations to the children was a compelling drama performance by the ReStory Foundation team, designed to help children understand practical steps to stay safe. This creative approach made complex issues accessible and memorable, ensuring that young audiences absorbed these life-saving lessons.”
Pearson said this intervention comes in response to disturbing reports of abuse in the community, where some soccer coaches have exploited their positions, leading to multiple cases of sexual assault. These revelations emerged through significant behavioral shifts in young victims, highlighting the urgent need for education, prevention, and community vigilance.
Pearson said along with these talks, their organisation has been running various campaigns for parents and caregivers in the wider area, empowering them with critical safety measures which include understanding their right to request child clearance certificates from anyone working with minors, encouraging active involvement in their children’s activities to spot early warning signs, and partnering with local soccer coaches to build a strong, accountable support network, identifying those who may be operating outside ethical and legal guidelines.
He added that the ReStory Foundation applauded the collective efforts of all stakeholders who came together last week. “Protecting children requires a united front, and by fostering collaboration and open dialogue, we can create safer communities where every child has the chance to thrive – free from fear and harm,” she concluded.
