Chatsworth man appears in court on animal cruelty and bestiality charge

A 58-year-old man from Welbedacht West appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court this week facing a charge related to alleged sexual acts involving an animal.

The accused, Joseph Driman, was arrested after neighbours allegedly witnessed the incident in the Welbedacht West area near Chatsworth, south of Durban.

According to court proceedings, the charge falls under Section 13 of South Africa’s Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act.

It was alleged in court that the accused unlawfully committed acts involving sexual contact with an animal.

The State informed the court that it intends opposing bail.

Driman is expected to return to court next Monday for a formal bail application.
