The SAPS Bomb Disposal Unit was dispatched to the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court following calls claiming that there was a bomb on the premises, however, the Ladysmith SAPS K9 Unit, Alfred Duma Municipality firefighters and Public Safety officials were soon on the scene and ensured that officials were safely evacuated on Monday afternoon, 3 October.
The mayhem started when an employee of the court received a phone call during which an individual alleged that an explosive device had been placed on the premises. Police were then alerted and the building was evacuated following a search conducted by members of the SAPS Bomb Disposal Unit and K9 officers.
Keate Street was also closed off to motorists who had to then be diverted. Ladysmith SAPS will conduct further investigations into the calls made to the court during their investigation of the hoax bomb threat. No explosive device was detected.
