It was a scene of utter disbelief and horror following a murder-suicide at Stiebel Place in the Blue Lagoon area around 17h35 on Monday afternoon, 14 August.

A series of panic activations were made to the Marshall Security Emergency Dispatch Centre from local businesses following reports of an ongoing shooting in the area.

Tyron Powell of Marshall Security said that multiple armed response officers, along with members of Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team and Netcare911 Paramedics, were dispatched to the scene immediately.

“According to preliminary reports, a tragic turn of events unfolded after a female employee at the business premises was allegedly fatally shot by her companion. The individual then turned the firearm on himself, resulting in both of their tragic deaths. Paramedics arrived on scene promptly but unfortunately, both patients were declared deceased on site. Members of our Special Operations Team ensured the swift and effective securing of the crime scene which was handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) Durban Central for thorough investigation and processing,” said Powell.

The circumstances surrounding the devastating incident are being diligently examined by authorities to determine the sequence of events and any underlying factors.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims during this incredibly difficult time,” added Powell.

Colonel Robert Netshiunda, Provincial SAPS spokesperson, said that police from SAPS Durban Central are investigating cases of murder and inquest.

He said: “A man reportedly shot and fatally wounded a woman at an establishment on Blue Lagoon Beach before allegedly turning a gun on himself. Information at this stage indicates that the man entered the establishment and confronted the woman, who was on duty. An altercation erupted between the two, leading to the fatal shooting.”

Col Netshiunda added that a relationship between the two victims has not yet been confirmed.
