Atiyyah Limalia, an extraordinary 18-year-old from Orient Islamic School, has set a shining example of hard work and dedication, earning a spot at the prestigious ICC in Durban, courtesy of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, for her outstanding matric results.
Achieving a remarkable 94% aggregate and securing eight distinctions, Atiyyah has proven that determination and consistent effort truly pay off. But her journey was not without its challenges.
Reflecting on her matric year, Atiyyah shared how difficult it was at times but expressed immense pride in how far she had come. “The workload was intense, but I stayed focused, managing my time effectively. I prioritised tasks and set achievable goals, and when it came to exams, I stuck to a daily routine of reviewing notes and practising past papers. It wasn’t always easy, but it was worth it.”

Her greatest challenge, she revealed, was the pressure of the exams. The weight of expectations from herself, her family, and her teachers created stress, but rather than letting it overwhelm her, she broke her study schedule into manageable chunks, learning to cope and push through.
Her subjects—ranging from English HL and Afrikaans FAL to mathematics, physical sciences, life sciences, accounting, and business studies—were demanding. Despite her struggles with languages, particularly English HL, Atiyyah found the strength to push forward.
“Languages have always been a weakness for me,” she admitted. “The added pressure of matric exams made it even more daunting. But I didn’t let it stop me. I kept going, putting in the effort day by day.”
Atiyyah’s story is one of perseverance and triumph. Her consistent effort, dedication, and belief in herself led to results she can be proud of, and it is a testament to every matriculant that success comes from continuous hard work, even when things get tough.
Now, Atiyyah is setting her sights on studying medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The fact that the university is located in her hometown means she can remain close to her family and continue to be supported as she pursues her dreams. It is her parents, she says, who have always been her greatest inspiration.
“My parents have always been my biggest motivators. They have shown me what it means to work hard, to push through adversity, and to never give up. I want to make them proud by following my passion for medicine.”
To all the matriculants preparing for 2025, Atiyyah’s message is clear: “Matric is not just about exams; it’s about believing in yourself and staying committed to your goals. It’s a challenging year, but with the right mindset, the right strategy, and consistent effort, you can achieve anything. Start early, stay organised, and never underestimate the power of perseverance. Don’t give up, even when the road seems tough—success is waiting for you at the end.”
Atiyyah’s story reminds us all that no dream is too big when you’re willing to work for it. The future is in your hands—stay focused, stay determined, and let your journey begin.
