A tow truck operator was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the N2 southbound, shortly before the KwaMashu off-ramp, on Tuesday morning, 15 August. KZN VIP spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said emergency teams responded to the scene, where the tow truck had veered off the roadway and crashed.

According to Naidoo, the driver was found severely entrapped inside the wreckage when KZN VIP paramedics arrived. “Sadly, despite the urgent response, the driver showed no signs of life and was declared deceased at the scene,” said Naidoo.

Preliminary information suggested that the driver may have suffered a medical emergency before losing control of the vehicle. However, Naidoo stressed that the exact circumstances leading up to the crash remained unconfirmed and would be investigated by the relevant authorities. The tragedy hit close to home for KZN VIP members, as the tow truck operator was well known to the team and had worked alongside emergency personnel at numerous accident scenes.

“This was an especially difficult scene for our team. The deceased was someone we knew and had worked alongside on numerous accident scenes,” said Naidoo. He described tow truck operators as an integral part of the emergency response community, often working long and demanding hours and responding under difficult circumstances to assist motorists and emergency personnel.

“Today, we mourn not only the loss of a tow truck operator, but also a familiar face and a valued colleague within the emergency response community. Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones during this incredibly painful time. May his soul rest in peace,” added Naidoo.
