In celebration of the Phoenix township’s 50th anniversary, women from across the community gathered at the Phoenix Child Welfare (PCW) for a special briefing session where plans for the much-anticipated Phoenix 50 Years Celebration was officially unveiled.

The energy in the room reflected a shared pride in the area’s journey and an eagerness to participate in the year-long programme of events, as it marked a powerful milestone in the community’s journey of growth, resilience and unity.

The PCW shared the historical background of Phoenix township. They said: “Established in 1976 as a township north of Durban, Phoenix was created during the Apartheid-era as part of the government’s housing developments. Over five decades, it has grown into a vibrant, resilient and dynamic community, which is rich in culture, entrepreneurship, faith-based initiatives and civic activism. Generations of families have built their lives here, contributing to the social and economic fabric of the region. The 50-year milestone is not just a celebration of time passed, but of perseverance, unity and progress.”

PCW gears up for Phoenix’s 50th anniversary.

Leading the presentation was Dr Muni Kooblal, who introduced the exciting projects planned for the year and encouraged attendees to become ambassadors for the campaign. He called on residents to get actively involved and spread the word across Phoenix and surrounding communities, emphasising that every initiative forms part of a broader fundraising drive to support the ongoing work of the PCW in serving vulnerable children and families.

Among the headline events is the Charity Queen Contest. The contest aims to crown a community ambassador who will not only represent Phoenix 50 but also raise vital funds for the Phoenix Children’s Home. Organisers believe this initiative will blend glamour with goodwill, drawing strong community participation. Another highlight was the launch of the Phoenix 50 commemorative book — a legacy project that captures stories, memories and milestones from the past five decades.

The PCW said: “Excitement was also building around the Telethon scheduled for 30 July at the Phoenix Community Centre. The telethon aims to rally residents, businesses and supporters to pledge their support in real time, with entertainment, special guests and live fundraising moments planned for the evening. Additionally, 50 Lucky Draw prizes will be up for grabs throughout the campaign period, adding further momentum to the fundraising efforts. Residents who are turning 50 years old in 2026 are especially encouraged to come forward, as part of a special feature celebrating ‘50 Years of Phoenix, 50-Year-Olds of Phoenix’ — honouring individuals who share this milestone year with the community itself.”
