On 1 February, communities across the globe observe World Hijab Day, highlighting the significance of the hijab in people’s lives. The Merebank and Chatsworth Tabloid spoke to the community to ask one question: What does wearing a hijab mean to you? From expressions of faith and personal identity to statements of modesty and empowerment, the responses shed light on why understanding and respecting this choice matters.

wearing a hijab is a personal choice that i took and also a meaningful part of my identity as a revert to islam. As a Muslim woman, it represents my connection to my faith and my values of modesty and humility. It’s a reminder to focus on my inner qualities and to cultivate a sense of inner peace. My hijab is also a symbol that shows that islam is not just about culture and race but rather a way of life. I wear it with pride, knowing it represents my strength and resilience. It’s a part of who I am, and I’m proud to express my faith through my attire.

For me, the hijab is so much more than just a piece of cloth; it’s a deeply personal choice that reflects who I strive to be. It’s my quiet act of worship. It reminds me to be kind, be patient, and be the best version of myself. Even on the days when things get heavy and the world feels loud, wearing it gives me a sense of grounding and confidence I can’t quite explain. It’s like a peaceful anchor in the middle of the chaos.

It is not just a tradition, it is a personal choice that reflects my dignity and my respect for my faith. More than anything, I believe that our relationship with Allah starts from within and the hijab is a beautiful way to carry that inner peace into the world.

The reason I wear a hijab is to preserve myself for my husband. Its a way of protecting myself from any unwanted male attention. I also wear it as a form of identification so that people know I am Muslim.

Muslim women are not being oppressed to wear the hijab.
