It is time to take care of your environment, stop illegal dumping and increase community pride. Ward 20 councillor Abbas Warasally recently joined forces with teams from the Alfred Duma Local Municipality to clean up areas within his ward, taking a hands-on approach to ensure residents live in a cleaner, healthier environment.

Warasally commended the municipal teams for their efforts but expressed disappointment that some residents continue to dump waste illegally, despite the services already provided. “When visitors come from outside town, they should find our areas neat and well cared for,” he said.

“What’s surprising is that some of the same people who complain about illegal dumping are often the ones guilty of it. We need to take responsibility and look after our own surroundings.” He reminded residents that illegal dumping fines have recently increased, and those who fail to pay will have the fines added to their municipal rates accounts. Continued non-payment could even lead to electricity disconnections until debts are settled.

To promote better waste management, Warasally announced the launch of a new waste separation project that will start soon. “The municipality has gone the extra mile by providing free burn bags to help households separate their waste before collection,” he said. “This will make it easier to manage refuse properly and reduce illegal dumping.”
Warasally encouraged residents to use the services and stop illegal dumping altogether. “People are paying for refuse removal, yet some still dump illegally. What are they paying for? Let’s do the right thing keep our community clean and take pride in our environment.”
