Doctors and medical professionals came together on Church Street in the heart of Tongaat to use their expertise to give back to the community.
Supported by medical institutions from across the north of Durban, the event, organised by Dr Shervar Gopal, Dr Rajesh Singh, Dr Shan Harilal and Dr Nundkumar Ramjas, saw more than 700 residents in attendance.
Dr Gopal said: “This is the first time we are having a wellness day here at our practice. It is just us trying to find a way to treat people in the area and to give back to the community.”
The event drew participation from many organisations including Tongaat Pharmacy, Belmed Pharmacy, IPPS Medical Rescue, Mediclinic Victoria, Ampath, Ribumed and many more.

Dr Rajesh Singh said: “We started this practice way back in 1988 and we have been serving the community of Tongaat and the surrounding areas since. We thought it was about time that we reached out to help the community to be more aware about their health.”
In addition to tests and screenings, numerous medical professionals addressed the community on a variety of topics relating to ensuring good health and well-being.
Dr Harilal believes that community outreach events like this are necessary due to lack of quality of services available at state facilities. He said: “We are reaching out to our patients and to other’s that are unable to afford health services with the aim of giving them a baseline indication of their current health status.
