Residents of Weycroft, Gildcroft, and Helmcroft (WGH) recently came together to hold a community cleanup to address criminal activity and create a safer environment. The event, which took place on 2 August , was led by the WGH Neighbourhood Watch.

During the cleanup, residents cleared garbage and debris from pathways. WGH PRO, Thoheda Baccus, said they found “large amounts of used needles, knives, and other weapons in the pathways.”

She added that in the last three weeks, arrests have been made on these very pathways for housebreaking, cable theft, and attempted murder by a fleeing criminal. “Suspects were caught with dangerous weapons. The community is living in fear, and the lives of schoolchildren walking through the neighbourhood are at risk,” she explained. Baccus also noted that the drugs being sold in the area have made their way into schools surrounding Longcroft.

Baccus thanked the 12 residents who assisted with the project, stating that the cleanup was “much appreciated” by the community. “We appeal to all residents to play an active role in our neighbourhood,” she said. “We need your help and support to be able to do future projects, which will be on a larger scale.”
