The Phoenix community has been called upon to play a proactive role in combating crime following a recent surge in criminal activity. Over the past week, at least three home invasions have been reported, prompting concerns about safety and security.

Councillor Dr Jonathan Annipen described the recent spike in violent crime, including a disturbing incident involving the assault of a mentally challenged man in Grove End, as deeply troubling and wholly unacceptable. “As public representatives and community members, we cannot remain silent while residents live in fear in their own homes,” he said. Annipen emphasised that the increased frequency of house invasions and robberies is eroding the sense of safety and creating anxiety and frustration. He called for urgent and coordinated intervention to address these acts of criminality, which often target the most vulnerable community members.

Annipen stressed the importance of strengthening community policing forums (CPFs) and providing them with adequate support. “CPFs play a vital role in bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community by providing real-time, ground-level intelligence and fostering trust,” he said. Annipen advocated for a multi-faceted approach that includes better policing, visible patrolling, socio-economic support, and long-term investment in youth outreach and job creation to address the root causes of crime.

KZN VIP Protection Services spokesperson Gareth Naidoo echoed Annipen’s sentiments, urging the community to take an active role in crime prevention. “Residents should invest in intruder detection systems monitored 24/7, secure their perimeters with high-quality fencing and gates, and avoid displaying valuables where they can be seen from the street,” he advised. Naidoo also suggested that residents identify and report suspicious activity, such as drug dens. He credited KZN VIP’s proactive approach with helping to lower crime in the Phoenix community recently, saying, “Together, with vigilance and cooperation, we can reduce crime and protect what matters most.”
