Police are investigating a case of murder after a 29-year-old man was killed during a house robbery in Havenside last week.
Collin Chetty, communications officer of SAPS Bayview, said: “On 9 April at about 5.15am, it is alleged that three suspects entered the yard of the victim’s home in Turfwood Place. They accosted a female who was hanging clothes on the line. When the son heard the commotion, he went to investigate what was happening. One of the suspects shot the son in the abdomen. He was transported to Chatsmed Gardens Hospital, where he succumbed to his injury.”
Sandra Singh, a neighbour, described the deceased, Prenolan Nicholas Samuel, as a gentle soul who has left the earth too soon.
“The community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a bright light who passed away at the age of 29. Known for his unwavering kindness, humility, and respect for all, Nicholas was not just a young man of promise, he was a living example of love in action. Born and raised in our very own neighbourhood, Havenside, Chatsworth, Nicholas touched the lives of many through his selfless deeds, warm smile, and compassionate heart. He never turned away from an opportunity to make someone’s day better.
“He was a man of deep faith, God-fearing and grounded in his beliefs which guided his every step. Those who knew him often speak of the strength of his character, the sincerity of his words, and the light he carried within him. In every interaction, Nicholas showed honour and respect, treating everyone, young and old, with the same gentle grace. His work ethic was second to none. He was hardworking and driven, but never boastful. He believed in uplifting others and was especially passionate about being a role model to the youth with honesty, humility, and love.”
Singh said what she will remember most is his infectious smile, which was a reflection of his beautiful spirit and his heart, which was generous and kind.
She further added: “It was rare to see Nicholas without a smile, and rarer still to leave his company without one of your own. The loss of Nicholas is a profound one. He was more than just a neighbour, friend, or family member, he was a beacon of hope, a hero, and a true example of what it means to live with purpose. As we grieve his passing, we also celebrate his life, a life that though cut short, was full of meaning and love. May his legacy live on in the hearts of those he touched, and may we honour him by striving to embody the values he held dear.”
Samuel was a described as a devout Hindu. Following his tragic and untimely demise, the Sri Adi Shesha Raam Bhajana Group posted on Facebook: “When we lose someone close to us it is very painful, but when that life is snatched away at such a young age, the pain is unbearable. It is said in the Shastras that we should not lament death because it is part of our journey in this world, but God please forgive our imperfection because today we lost our child and this is not the natural order of things. Nicholas was our child, he was our brother, he was our friend and he was a Bhaktha. The Sri Adi Shesha Raam Bhajan Group is shattered and our loss cannot be expressed through any amount of words.You came to us as a child in 2011 and through life’s demands you remained with us as a proud member and a devote follower of Lord Raam, a true Ramadhoot. Now you join the Paramathma and I know that you will continue to be with us in spirit. Go my child and find your place amongst the divine, for that is where you belong. A kind and gentle soul that will now know Moksha.”
Amawele Emergency Services attended the scene. Claude Subramodey, the owner, said: “Medics arrived on scene within minutes to find an Indian man in his 20s shot multiple times. He was transported rapidly to a private hospital. The other family members were treated and stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital for the further care they required. Sadly, the man was declared deceased upon arrival at hospital.”
Samuel was laid to rest on Saturday, 12 April and cremated at the Clare Estate Crematorium.
