In a heartwarming display of community support, organisation ICRA has come to the aid of Eastview Primary School and sponsored a much-needed water tank with another in the works. The school, like most others, is grappling with the water outages for the past two years.
The school is now equipped with a reliable water backup system, thanks to the generosity and support of ICRA. According to the acting principal, Mrs Naidoo: “before the sponsorship of the water tank, the school relied on unsustainable water measures – allocating 5 litres of bottled water per day, per classroom and water for sanitation. However, this unsustainable approach was not an ideal solution, because whenever there is no water in school, sanitation becomes a major problem,” said Naidoo.
“The support received will make a significant difference in ensuring a reliable water supply for our learners and staff members. This partnership showcases the power of unity when supporting the needs of the community, and we appreciate the efforts in creating a healthier and more sustainable learning environment,” added Naidoo.
Upon learning about the school’s plight, DLC leader Councillor Patrick Pillay intervened, reaching out to the operations manager of ICRA, Junaid Mahomed for assistance. Pillay said that clean water is a basic human right, and that institutions, particularly, should not be affected as this hinders the progress of students. “Despite the city’s claim that water shortages are due to rapid growth, he stressed that the turnaround time to repair water leaks is a major contributing factor exacerbating these outages,” said Pillay.
He said that the water crisis in the eThekwini is far from over, and in these challenging times, it is essential that institutions are prioritised. He said, “Most institutions are unable to invest in essential infrastructure like water tanks because they lack financial resources. ICRA’s sponsorship is an example of how community-led initiatives can produce lasting results. I am encouraging individuals and businesses to engage with their local institutions and help wherever possible for the greater good of their communities.”
Operations manager for ICRA, Junaid Mahomed echoed this sentiment, by highlighting the organisation’s commitment to helping those in need. He said, “All our sponsorships are made possible because of our donors, and ICRA is indeed grateful to all of its donors who have generously sponsored the organisation over the years, making a huge difference in the lives of countless people and institutions.”
Mahomed stated that since the water woes started in eThekwini, there has been a greater need for assistance. “ICRA will continue to assist and give priority to those institutions that have no water storage mechanisms in place,” added Mahomed. The Eastview Primary School staff, SGB and pupils have expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Pillay, ICRA and its donors for this life-changing gift and for investing in the well-being of their school.
