Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School recently hosted a successful fundraiser, ‘Beats and Blankets’, which raised over R8,000 for the Domino Foundation’s baby home roof. The event, held on the school’s campus on Thursday, 6 March, was a pupil-driven initiative that showcased the school’s musical talents.
Linda-Lee Sofilas, head of humanities said that the idea was conceived by four pupils: Krisha Reddy, band captain; Havaria Pillay, Marimba band captain; Dominique O’Brien, Interact captain; and Thandolwethu Myeza, Umzwilili captain.
Sofilas explained that when the school’s head of music, Victoria Erasmus, learned about the Domino Foundation’s need for roof repairs, the pupils eagerly took on the challenge. “The girls jumped on saying, ‘Let’s raise the roof’,” Sofilas added.
Sofilas expressed pride in the pupils’ selflessness: “We take immense pride in events like these, which are completely initiated and driven by our pupils. They willingly dedicate their talents and time to support a greater cause. This spirit of selflessness aligns with our ethos, and for young teenagers to look beyond themselves and do so without seeking recognition or reward, truly embodies what it means to be a Fatima girl.”
The event featured a diverse programme, including performances by the school’s Umzwilili vocal ensemble, Marimba band, and high school band. The Interact team also hosted a braai, selling boerewors rolls to support the cause. The event concluded with a collaborative piece performed by all three ensembles.
Pillay praised the success of the event: “It was outstanding, and I am grateful that everyone was able to make our little thought a reality.”
Reddy described the event as a “beautiful afternoon filled with laughter and love”. She added: “We are immensely grateful for the support given by our girls towards the little hearts at the Domino Foundation. It was a dream to see our little idea become a reality.”
The event was attended by over 200 pupils, parents, and staff.
