Seven-year-old golf prodigy, Kirana Govender from Westville Junior Primary, is set to make a big impact at the fothcoming KwaZulu-Natal U11 provincial golf tournament. Despite her tender age, Kirana has been selected to compete against older, more experienced players — a remarkable feat that is sure to make waves in the golfing world.
Kirana admitted that she is both nervous and excited about the challenge but remains confident of her team’s chances. “I love golf very much, and when I’m not playing, I play a golf game on my mom’s phone. Tiger Woods is my favourite because he never gave up, even after his accident,” she said.
Her golfing journey started at the age of two when she played in the garden with her father and sisters. She received her first golf clubs as a toddler and formally began lessons with 1st 2 8teen Junior Golf Coaching in February 2023. A year later, she joined SA Kids Golf and played in her first tournament. “I want to play golf and beat my dad,” she said with a smile.
Kirana’s parents, Kuben and Sumeshnee Govender, admitted that they were surprised that she qualified at such a young age. “We are nervous about the long tournament ahead, especially given her age, but we know this will be a great experience for Kirana,” they said.
Her love for the game has always been evident. Even before she started playing competitively, she eagerly walked the course while supporting her sisters. “She never complains, even in the rain. Her motto is always, ‘The rain cannot kill you,’ or ‘If it’s not lightning, we can still play,’” her parents shared. They also expressed gratitude to the coaches and teachers who have nurtured her golfing talent.
Westville Junior Primary Principal Sharon Jenkins said the school is incredibly proud of Kirana. “I still remember the day she told me she wanted to play golf with her big sisters. My first thought was that she was far too little. But this little firecracker showed grit and determination and proved me wrong. Kirana has inspired so many. Her dedication, humble attitude, and passion for all she does have made her an ambassador for our school.”
With her sights set on victory, Kirana is ready to take on the fairways and make her mark in the tournament.
