A 40-year-old Durban Solid Waste (DSW) employee was declared dead on the scene after he was run over by a DSW truck while working just behind the Royal Hotel in the Durban Central Business District on Thursday morning, 26 May.

According to Ward 26 DA PR Councillor, Sharmaine Sewshanker, the employee fell from the back of the moving truck, slipping under the back wheel. Sewshanker said: “It was a very unfortunate incident as the truck went over the employee and crushed his head. He was declared dead on scene.”

Sewshanker, who had rushed to the scene, said that at the time of her arrival the employee’s body was already covered and awaiting pick-up to be taken to the mortuary. “My heartfelt condolences to his colleagues and his family, the DSW team he was working with and to eThekwini Municipality for the loss of an employee while on duty,” said Sewshanker.

This is a developing story.
