A case of murder has been opened at the Phoenix SAPS, after a 45-year old man, identified as Sureshan Brian Pillay, was found dead with multiple stab wounds, at an abandoned building on Sunford Drive, on Sunday, 22 May.
Phoenix SAPS communications officer, Captain Louise Naidoo, said Constable Moonsamy received a complaint of a dead body at around 9.30am and rushed to the scene. She said: “Upon arrival the deceased body was pointed out, which was lying in an abandoned building. Cst Moonsamy approached the body and carried out the preliminary investigation, leading to the victim being positively identified. The body of the deceased seemed to be there for a long period before it was noticed and reported. It looked as if the person was asleep because numerous homeless people use that building as their daily shelter. The body was covered with a blanket.”
Cpt Naidoo further added that paramedics from KwaZulu-Natal emergency services examined the body at the scene. Among the first responders was also KZN VIP and their spokesperson, Gareth Naidoo, said the control center received a call from an anonymous caller informing of a dead body on Sunford Drive inside an abandoned building, at 10.20am. He said: “Immediately all available response and tactical units were despatched to the location. Upon arrival it was established by KZN VIP members after interviewing a police officer on scene that an Indian male +-45 was stabbed to death with a broken beer bottle by an unknown individual.”
He added that the motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.
