Operations to get back Umgeni Steam Railway (USR) are currently underway, the railway was damaged during the floods which led to the cancellation of train rides.

USR’s Danielle Peter said: “Umgeni Steam Railway did not, unfortunately escape the wrath of the storm and has sustained a considerable amount of damage to the Old Main Line between Kloof and up towards Harrison station.

The Old Natal Main Line unfortunately took quite a hammering as can be seen in these pictures and thus all passenger train activity has been suspended until it can be repaired. This is a monumental task but we already have crews out on the line to get things cleaned up. USR will be looking for additional fill material, sand, rock and clean builders rubble as well as use of a Bobcat or TLB on select days to rehabilitate the Old Main Line. Free dumping is available at Inchanga Station off Thousand Hills Rd /  MR385Rd opposite D732.” The disturbance caused by flood damage led to the cancellation of the famous vintage train rides that were already scheduled.

“Trains for the 1st and 8th of May 2022 have been cancelled due to the current flooding. Passengers will be contacted in due course for alternative arrangements. We hope to see steam thundering up the valley of 1000 hills again soon, watch this space!,” added Peter.
