Volunteers at the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre in Chatsworth have come together to make food hampers for residents affected by the torrential rain and floods which claimed over 400 lives and left thousands of people homeless.
The group are also assisting pensioners and physically challenged residents with the cleaning up of homes following the floods. Chairperson of the Nelson Mandela Youth Centre, Clive Pillay said that they have been getting water and warm cooked food to certain areas. He said: “We are appealing to people to donate food, canned food, vegetables, blankets and foam mattresses that will be distributed to people affected by the flooding. Residents are encouraged to drop items at the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre. No clothing items will be accepted. Volunteers are needed to assist with cleaning up operations, providing cooked food or any other relief efforts.”
