Phoenix Police have arrested four men in connection with the fatal stabbing of a father at the Phoenix Plaza Shopping Centre over the weekend.
Amaoti resident, Mathemba Shezi, 47, was attacked by the suspects after withdrawing
cash from the ATM on Sunday afternoon, 12 December.
Family spokesperson, Nombuso Shezi, sister of the deceased father of five, said the family is heartbroken. “He had taken his children to the salon for a haircut and then proceeded to the ATM to withdraw money when he was stabbed and killed. He didn’t deserve to die like that. We are still in disbelief that he’s no more, our mother is not coping at all. There’s no greater pain than the pain we are going through as a family, my brother was everything to his children.”

Shezi described her brother as a quiet and reserved person who always avoided fights and was a peaceful man. “I don’t understand how a person can take away the life of someone who was so loving and peaceful. My brother was a people’s person, he was highly respected and known by many in the community. We want to see justice. Those responsible for my brother’s death must be severely punished for robbing minor children of their father. My heart cries for my nephews and nieces who will now grow up without a father. How can someone be so cruel?” said an emotional Shezi.
Phoenix Police and private security officers from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived to find Shezi lying in a pool of blood in the parking lot of the shopping centre with a stab wound to his thigh. Phoenix SAPS communications officer, Captain Louise Naidoo, said: “The deceased had just withdrawn an undisclosed amount of cash from the ATM when he was attacked by four unknown suspects
