The Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare Society, located in Warner Beach near the library, is optimistic that the incoming 2021/2022 committee will continue to build the organisation which has been serving the community for 75 years.
The committee, led by Chairperson Jenny Smith, welcomed vice-chairperson, Pauline Widdowson, and social worker, Sandra Govender. They will work alongside Morgan Padayachee, who is treasurer and Linda Matthee in administration.
Smith said the other committee members are June Gray, Belinda Mkhize, Lyn Bignell, Pranisha Moses, Nombulelo Khomo, Prea Naidoo, Melanie Crowe, Sally Meiring, Lyn Hazell, Julia Orbe and Pete Smith. As a non-government funded organisation, the team relies on donations and other fundraising initiatives to be able to reach those in need of help.
Smith said: “We are in need of the community to help us sustain the welfare as we solely depend on their support. We have also put together exciting initiatives like educational programmes and fundraising events which the community can expect to enjoy.”
Throughout the year, the society has hosted a number of workshops and run a thrift shop from their offices situated at 2 Hall Road, Warner Beach. “We sell second-hand clothing, bric-a-brac and household goods at very reasonable prices. Please come and browse, the trading hours are from 8am to 11.30am on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. As we go forward, and with less Covid-19 restrictions, we will be running more educational programmes and fundraising events.”
A ‘Red Hanger Sale’ will be hosted at their offices on Saturday, 6 November, from 7am to 11.30am. Additionally, the society will be hosting their annual ‘Beach Walk’ which will be held on Sunday, 5 December, from Winkelspruit Beach to Baggies Beach. “There will be an entry fee of R20 per adult and lots of clothing, household goods, toys and other fun-filled activities at the event.” Smith said the welfare aims to promote a healthy family life, strengthen the families who need help and preserve the family unit. “We have a social worker that is available by appointment from 8am to 1pm on weekdays and also a number of workshops that have been ongoing since the year 2020,” she added.
