Known as “Erfenisdag” in Afrikaans, the intention of Heritage Day is for all South Africans to celebrate their heritage, the diversity of their beliefs and traditions and to remember their struggles against apartheid.
Heritage Day is on Friday, 24 September, and to celebrate this day with South Africans, both young and old, ML Sultan Principal, Donna Iyer, educator, Kaveer Bihaspat, and learners Mpilwnehle Sithole, Kwanele Ndimane, Vihaan Junabadur and Viharia Junabadur dressed in traditional attire and brought out the braai stands. “Because what is Heritage Day without a braai?” said Bihaspat. Heritage Day is also known as National Braai Day and recognises the South African culinary tradition of holding informal backyard braais; a big part of the public holiday celebrations.
The day is one of our newly-created public holidays and its significance rests in remembering the heritages of the many cultures which make up our rainbow nation through creative expression, language and storytelling, the food eaten and historical inheritance as well as recognising aspects of South African culture and the land we call home. Heritage is of utmost importance for each and every one of us, this is what roots us and sparks the trajectory bond in culture, tradition and what makes us South African,” said Iyer. She said a big thank you goes out to Taj Collection and Mica for sponsoring the traditional attires and braai goodies. “We would like to wish everyone a happy, safe and Covid-19 regulated Heritage Day,” concluded Iyer.
