The residents of Umdoni Municipality are rejoicing at the deployment of extra law enforcement, including soldiers, to restore peace and order to the area following the looting and civil unrest that erupted during the week-long protests.
“They came too late but we are glad to have them here,” said Amanda Kubheka, an Umzinto resident. The municipality said a task team consisting of Umdoni councillors, traditional and religious leadership, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the SAPS commenced with a vigorous root-out process of looted goods and apprehend people suspected to be involved. Kate Townsend, another resident, applauded the deployment on social media as well as the progress made thus far. “It is nice to have peace once again and seeing the community unite against the chaos and looting. The visibility of soldiers and police have put an end to the loud gunshots. It was becoming too much.” Umdoni mayor, Sibongile Khathi, and executive committee members also welcomed the deployment and visibility of the army members within the municipality. “We have been informed in confidence that the army members will be working 24/7 in our area and this will have a positive impact in our efforts to rebuild our community.” Khathi said above the recovery of stolen goods, the 160 SANDF personnel will work hand-in-glove with local law enforcement agencies and bring back the much yearned for stability and peace in the Umdoni area, subsequent to the unpleasant community protests recently. “We therefore urge for the cooperation of the members of the public, business forums among other structures while government implements all measures to ensure stability and create a safe and peaceful environment for the Umdoni people.” The municipality also reminded the Umdoni community of the ever-present threat of Covid-19 as well as the adjusted level 4 lockdown rules and regulations.
