Man dies in Cato Crest blaze

An unidentified man died in a shack fire in Cato Crest on Thursday, 8 July, where over two hundred shacks were destroyed in the blaze.

Cato Manor SAPS communications officer, Captain C A Sibiya said a man who has not been identified at this stage was burnt beyond recognition. “We are investigating an inquest following the incident,” said Capt Sibiya.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said: “When paramedics arrived on scene a large portion of the homes were well alight with residents scrambling to save whatever possessions they could. According to the public the fire had started allegedly due to an illegal electrical connection.”

He added that the fire had been extinguished by the eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services.
