The second phase of the Covid-19 vaccine roll-out for the vaccination of persons who are aged 60 years and older commenced on Monday across the country.
Health officials at the Ladysmith Provincial Nursing Centre were ready for the vaccine rollout. Many senior citizens felt excited about getting their vaccines as the start of the Covid-19 third wave has already been reported. Speaking to the Ladysmith Herald, most of the senior citizens said that they felt positive about receiving their vaccinations. Husband and wife, Pieter and Magda Ferreira, who were first in line to receive the first vaccine for the day, said that they were initially a little nervous but were impressed with the process. “We are extremely impressed with the way we have been helped today. The injection itself was quick and painless,” said Pieter.
Edith Addison said that she is excited to receive her jab and encourages everyone to have their vaccination done. “This is not only for our safety, but for the safety of many,” said Addison, 70, who was ready to roll up her sleeves to receive her jab. Regie Marshall said that she is a little scared of the needle, but is ready to safeguard herself and her family. Sally Fourie said she is happy to get her jab and hopes that all goes well afterwards. One senior citizen, who wished to remain anonymous, said that he is really scared, because of the things that he has heard and read. “I’m not a very healthy person and I am so scared that this vaccine might go against my body,” said the senior citizen, while waiting in line. Ladysmith Provincial Hospital, acting CEO, Dr. Mokhethi Pule was on hand to assist staff in helping the elderly. “We want the process to be quick and without hassle and to make sure that our senior citizens are helped with their vaccination,” he said. For many seniors this was also a time for a quick catch up with friends they have not seen or was unable to visit due to the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown.
