A breakthrough has been made in the Lamontville triple murder case with the arrest of four suspects accused of gunning down three people, including a teenage girl, on Ndlovu Road, last week.

Navishka Roopnarain, 17, from Demat, was identified among the deceased. Media reports further identified the two deceased men as Siphelele Dimba, 35, and Lungisani Lucky Xhoza, 41. A fourth victim survived the shooting and is recovering in hospital. KZN provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, commended and applauded police officers from Lamontville who worked around the clock to arrest the perpetrators who were behind the shooting. “The actions of the police officers who attended to the scene are highly commendable. They responded swiftly and immediately initiated an investigation to apprehend the culprits. They continued to work throughout the night following up on leads received from the community. We also wish to thank members of the community who came forward to assist police to identify the perpetrators,” said Mkhwanazi.

Brigadier Jay Naicker, provincial police spokesperson, said the officers from Lamontville worked throughout the night to trace the suspects behind the shooting. “Four men aged between 23 and 24 were located at a house in Lamontville. The suspects were found in unlawful possession of three firearms and 11 rounds of ammunition. Police also seized rock cocaine, a flat screen TV as well as a vehicle that were found on the premises.” The suspects appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of drugs as well as unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. According to Captain Nqobile Gwala, the incident unfolded when the gunmen had opened fire on a vehicle that was parked on the Ndlovu Road. “Two of the occupants of the vehicle were killed instantly in the car while a third was seriously injured. The body of a woman with gunshot wounds to the head was found in the bushes adjacent to where the shooting occurred. Lamontville police officers opened a case of murder and attempted murder for investigation,” Gwala said.
