Fifteen families were left without homes after a fire tore through the Puntas Hill informal settlement in Springfield on Wednesday, 5 August.
The blaze broke out at about 4.30pm in Ward 25, with eThekwini Fire Services rushing to the scene after receiving reports of the fire.
Upon arrival the firefighters found about 15 informal structures already engulfed in flames.
EThekwini communications Directorate said in a statement that the firefighters immediately worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring homes.
“The fire was brought under control at about 5pm, but firefighters remained at the scene to dampen down hotspots and prevent the flames from reigniting,” said eThekwini.
About 15 informal structures were destroyed, while one formal structure was damaged and a vehicle was also destroyed.
Several families have been displaced and are temporarily staying with neighbours and relatives.
No injuries, deaths or missing persons were reported.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and is being investigated.
The municipality’s Emergency Services team is working with relevant stakeholders to assess the damage and assist the affected families.
