Mob justice was meted out in full force by irate members of the public in Phoenix, recently, after a man was caught red-handed tampering with two vehicles at a business premises.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) members were called to the scene outside the hardware store where the brutalised man was detained.
RUSA head, Prem Balram, said, “The man was severely assaulted by the public after he was found tampering with two vehicles in Phoenix.
RUSA members responded to the business after staff had apprehended a suspect attempting to steal valuables from two vehicles on the property. Upon arrival, the suspect was found to have been severely injured.
He was reportedly assaulted by a mob that gathered at the scene. He was doused with petrol but was not set alight. No criminal charges were laid against the suspect.
Mob justice is a harsh reality which is in no way condoned but it is understood that community members are fed up with being soft targets for marauding criminals. The public is urged to contact the relevant authorities immediately when a suspect is apprehended so that justice can take its rightful course and the perpetrator can be punished accordingly by the law,” said Balram.
