Westville based organization, Robin Hood Foundation will be setting up a ‘Mandela Day Mahala Kids Market,’ whereby each of the children at Lalelani Primary in Ntshongweni will be able to ‘shop for free’ at the market. Kim Griffith Jones, coordinator at RHF said; “On 18 July, we’ll be setting up in the school’s hall, giving each learner an opportunity to take home at least five new outfits,” She said the learners will also be served some lunch.”
Jones said, “With just over 67 days to Mandela Day, RHF is appealing to the community to get involved and support our #wearsharecare drive.” To support the initiative, the community is encouraged to take up the 67-day challenge: where they donate one item or more of clothing for the next 67 days. RHF aims to collect about 16 tons of pre-loved, good condition clothes and shoes for the 700 children at Lalelani Primary School.
Recently, little supporters Keira and Tayla MaGregor showed their support to the initiative and helped their mother, Kirsten McGregor clear out their pre-loved toys, clothes and shoes that they no longer needed or wore.
Says Kirsten McGregor, “Having worked with Robin Hood with the children at Lalelani Primary over the last year and a half, this is a cause close to my heart and I would like to encourage all my friends to get involved, these little ones have little to nothing, and I’ve seen for myself how their faces light up with the smallest of blessings – from a hug to a small gift – so I’m so excited that they’ll get this opportunity to ‘shop for free’ at the Mahala Kids Market.”
RHF said they are in need of pre-loved clothes ages five to adults, blankets and toiletries (toothrush, toothpaste and facecloths). They also need donations of stationery; rulers, pencils, jotter books, pritt, and pens. Any non-perishable food items are also needed; hotdogs, juice, chips, cake and sweets which will be served as meals on the day.
