A vigilant security guard is lauded for quickly reacting and apprehending a suspect after a woman and her friend were robbed at knifepoint by three men on Florida Road on Sunday.

Berea SAPS communications officer, Cpt PN Naidoo, said, “At 2:30am, the complainant was walking on Florida Road when three unknown men walked up to her and her friend and held them up with a knife. They grabbed her handbag and ran off. The complainant screamed and the security guard who was on duty chased the suspects and arrested one suspect.

“The police were called and the suspect was arrested and detained at SAPS Berea for robbery. Once again partnership policing pays off. The management and staff of Berea SAPS would like to thank our partners for their excellent job.” Cpt PN Naidoo also urges the community to play an active role in combatting crime in the policing precinct by watching out for and reporting two vehicles believed to be involved in crimes in the area. The public is warned of four occupants in a grey Toyota Corolla who are wanted for a business robbery as well as three occupants in a cargo vehicle who are sought for attempted theft of motor vehicle.

Meanwhile, Berea SAPS have noted that there have been recent cases reported where housebreakings occur and motor vehicle keys have been found with the vehicles stolen.

Cpt Naidoo has encouraged community members to take steps to guard against falling prey to criminals by offering the following tips:
• Please ensure that your property is securely locked when going to bed at night or when going out. The alarm must be activated. There are lots of people who leave doors and windows open for their pets. Beware for the criminals as they look for opportunities to strike. Lock your vehicle keys away safely so that your vehicle will not be stolen.
• It also helps to try and keep your property well lit at night as this could be a deterrent to criminals.
