It was death by mob justice for a robber who was apprehended by community members in Trenance Manor and was brutally beaten, leading to his demise, last Monday.

According to Phoenix SAPS communications officer, Cpt L Naidoo, members of SAPS Phoenix responded to the complaint of murder at about 8:45pm, in Trenance Manor. “Upon their arrival at the scene, members found an unknown man lying in a pool of blood. The member’s further noticed that the deceased hands were tied behind his back with a red rope and his body was tied as well with another piece of rope. The legs of the deceased were tied together with a belt. The deceased had sustained an open wound on the forehead and the back of the head was full of lumps. He also sustained an open wound on
the side of his rib cage, consistent with a stab wound.

Next to the body of the deceased was a silver blue Hyundai i20 which had been damaged on the windscreen and the front part of the vehicle. The motive for the murder is vengeance as the deceased had robbed a house in the area and the occupants gave chase to the deceased and assaulted him. No arrest has been made as yet, however, arrests are imminent,” said Cpt Naidoo.

“A case of murder is being investigated. The community is urged to stop taking the law into their own hands. Vigilantism is not encouraged by the SAPS as this can result in serious injuries upon the victim or even death. Contact the police instead of taking the law into your own hands,” Cpt Naidoo added.

Phoenix CPF chairman, Umesh Singh, said, “We do not condone vigilantism on any level. Police and the law are in place to deal with guilty offenders. The community is urged to report crimes and be pro-active. We do not, however, encourage violence to be meted out to apprehended suspects in anger. The law must be allowed to take its course.”
