Police have refuted rape allegations after a 17-year-old girl claimed that she was dragged into the bushes near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza and raped by two men.

According to reports, the teen was taken to the Thuthuzela Care Centre for medical attention after she reported the rape to a petrol station owner, saying she was bound and left in the bushes over night on Monday, 1 October.

Communications Officer for the Pinetown SAPS, Captain Bongumusa Manqele, confirmed that investigations proved that the teen’s claims were false. “I would like to warn the public not to report false cases because they will be charged for perjury,” said Manqele.

“Apparently she left the Eastern Cape to visit her boyfriend in Clermont. She had a quarrel with the boyfriend and then claimed she was raped. No rape case was opened,” said Manqele.
