Carnage on the roads continues unabated as the festive season rolls out with one life claimed after a vehicle crashed with a tree and a light pole on Phoenix Highway in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) members both from the response and medical units, were dispatched to the accident scene after a motorist called in for assistance for the injured. RUSA head, Prem Balram, said, “One person was killed and two others injured after the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a tree and a light pole on Phoenix Highway.
RUSA members responded to the scene at about 02:05am, and on arrival it was established that a Nissan X Trail was travelling on Phoenix Highway when the vehicle crashed into a light pole and a tree. There was one fatality and the two casualties were transported to hospital by ambulance. The circumstances surrounding the accident is yet to be established.”
Phoenix SAPS communications officer, Cpt L Naidoo, confirmed the tragic incident and said, “A case of culpable homicide is under investigation at this stage. We urge road users to remain alert and adhere to all road safety rules especially when you have children and other occupants in the vehicle. Ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy and always buckle up. Stay within the speed limit and arrive alive at your destination. The road has claimed too many lives already. Let us work together and curb road deaths.”
“It is deeply distressing that it has only been a start to the festive season and there is such carnage on the roads in KZN. Prior to the festive season, road safety issues are spotlighted with an urgent need for extra precaution on the roads from both motorists and pedestrians. Motorists need to pay heed to reckless and negligent driving and be vigilant to ensure the safety of all road users,” said Balram.
