The brutal murder of a 79-year-old pensioner has sent shockwaves through the Merebank community after she was found stabbed and succumbed to her severe injuries shortly thereafter on Sunday evening. The elderly victim from Arcot Place in Merebank was stabbed on her face and neck, according to Wentworth SAPS communications officer, Cpt MP Gumede.

It is alleged that the suspect was known to the victim. “Wentworth SAPS members were alerted to the murder at about 16:15. Police, including Vispol and detectives proceeded to the scene at Arcot Place. The victim, a 79-year-old woman was declared deceased prior to the arrival of police. According to the witness who arrived first, the victim was still alive and was able to name who had stabbed her on her face and neck before she succumbed to her injuries. The suspect ran away after the commission of the crime.
The detective member who attended the scene followed leads and contacted his sources and the suspect, aged 37, an Indian male was arrested early in the morning at 03:00 in the Durban North area where he was on hiding. The suspect is in police custody and will be formally charged and will appear in court,” said Cpt Gumede.
