Ward 34 Councillor, Andrew Akkers, in partnership with the eThekwini Municipality, is scheduled to conclude “Operation Good Hope” today, 6 March 2026. The intensive service delivery initiative, which commenced on Tuesday, 3 March, targeted a range of infrastructure and safety concerns across the ward through a coordinated multi-departmental approach.

The independent councillor noted that the operation drew active participation from various municipal directorates, with the South African Police Service (SAPS) being deployed throughout the ward to bolster enforcement and security. Akkers stated that the primary objective was to address pre-identified and long-standing reported issues within a concentrated four-day window.

The scope of the operation included the reinstatement of potholes, the repair of water and sewer leaks, and the restoration of street lighting. Maintenance teams were also tasked with grass and verge cutting, alongside the systematic clean-up of illegal dumping sites that have hindered local sanitation.

Significant progress was recorded throughout the week, including a major clean-up operation conducted by Durban Cleansing and Solid Waste (CSW) on Effingham Road near Jamnadas. Environmental Health teams focused on vector control, specifically the spraying of drains for cockroaches, while horticultural staff addressed overgrown wild fig trees on Hyacinth and Hedley Roads.

Further technical work involved the refreshment of road markings on Rosary, Kew, and Hendon Roads to improve traffic safety. On the law enforcement front, SAPS officials successfully arrested an undocumented foreign national found to be operating a business without the required valid licences or permits.

Akkers indicated that the conclusion of the operation marks a significant step in clearing the backlog of service requests in Ward 34. The collaboration between the councillor’s office and municipal departments is expected to serve as a blueprint for future maintenance cycles in the area.
