Newlands East SAPS are investigating charges of attempted murder, robbery, assault GBH and attempted carjacking after two armed suspects held up a Dawn West Road resident and shot an off-duty cop who rushed to the family’s aid, this morning (Wednesday).
Netcare 911 responded to the scene and media liaison officer, Shawn Herbst, said, “An alleged hijacking on Dawnwest Road in Newlands East left a motorist shot on Wednesday morning. Netcare 911 responded to reports of a shooting where a 47-year-old male sustained a gunshot wound to his left thigh in an alleged hijacking.
The patient was assessed on scene by medics and once stabilised was transported by another ambulance service to hospital in a stable condition for further treatment.”
Police spokesperson, Cpt Nqobile Gwala said, “Today at 09:15 a courier man was delivering a parcel at Dawnwest Road in Newlands West and whilst the owner of the parcel was busy signing the documents, they were approached by two armed men. They were forced inside the house where the owner of the house was assaulted and also several shots were fired. He sustained injuries on the shoulder and was taken to hospital for medical attention. The suspects walked out of the house with the complainant’s car keys and attempted to highjack the courier vehicle. An off-duty police officer heard gunshots and immediately responded. There was an exchange of gunfire and the police officer sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh. He was taken to hospital for medical attention. Charges of robbery, attempted murder, assault GBH and attempted carjacking were opened for investigation at Newlands East SAPS.”
