A sleeping mother awakened to find three unknown men in her Stanmore Drive bedroom at which point they attempted to strangle her to prevent her from screaming out, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Phoenix SAPS communications officer, Cpt L Naidoo, said the suspects demanded cash and proceeded to ransack the house which is situated at Tees Tavern. “After a few minutes, the complainant’s 21-year-old son was brought into the room. The mother and son were both tied up. The suspects continued to demand for cash whilst they ransacked the house. Suddenly, one of the men appeared with a kettle of boiling water and poured the water on the complainant and her son. Both mother and son sustained burn wounds to the stomach region. After a while, the complainant heard
a car start and leave. A while later, the complainant’s father-in-law who resides on the same property but in the outbuilding, came to the house and assisted the complainant and her son by untying them,” Cpt Naidoo
said.

“He then contacted the complainant’s husband who came a short while later and took the complainant and her son to hospital. The suspects fled with a VW Golf 7, 10 cases of Smirnoff liquor, clothing, house keys with the gate remote and an undisclosed amount of cash. The VW Golf 7 vehicle was later found abandoned with the liquor and the clothing on Theomore Crescent,” added Cpt Naidoo.

The tavern has been the center of several reported crime incidents and drug busts. A case of house robbery is being investigated.
