Two learners of Glenwood Boys High School participated in the 2018 South African Junior Chess Championships which took place from 15 to the 24 December 2018. The championship was held in Johannesburg.
Chad Blomeyer (U18A) and Kuvam Pillay (U14A) flourished outstanding results together with their coach, Divesh Sookdev.
Sookdev said, “Chad Blomeyer scored 5.5 points out of seven securing the board prize. A board prize goes to the player that gets the highest score from all players on that specific team position. Kuvam Pillay scored four points of seven.
“Chad Blomeyer also competed in the National Wildcard Tournament. He finished tied second, but final position was seventh due to tiebreak. Chad has now qualified to compete in the South African Junior Closed Chess Championships, to be held in the March school vacation. This tournament hosts the best 30 players in the country per age group that compete for the honours of representing the country,” said Sookdev.
The coach himself adequately represented as he was appointed as the national team manager for the African Juniors (U20) Championship that was held in Uganda from 28 December 2018 to 6 January 2019, where South Africa finished as the best country with one gold and one silver.
