Two murderers were handed down life sentences and an added 54 year imprisonment respectively for murder, attempted murder and armed robbery at a liquor outlet at KwaMashu Hostel which occurred in October 2018.
On 7 February 2019, Durban High Court sentenced Sifiso Gumede (29) and Sizwe Mthiyane (34) to two life imprisonment for murder, 30 year imprisonment for attempted murder, 15 year imprisonment for robbery and nine year imprisonment for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunitions.
Colonel Thembeka Mbele, said, “In October 2018, a group of males were having a party at a local liquor outlet on Xolani Road at the KwaMashu Hostel, when they were approached by four men who pretended to be patrons.
“When they were informed that the liquor outlet was out of stock, they withdrew firearms, fired gunshots and robbed the patrons of cellphones and cash. Bonginkosi Biyela (29) and Sibonelo Mbanjwa (33) were fatally wounded.
“Other four victims were wounded and taken to hospital for medical attention. Suspects fled the scene on foot. A case of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery were opened at the KwaMashu police station for investigation. “Subsequently, on the same day, police were conducting an operation along Mzilikazi Road when they stopped and searched two males, Gumede and Mthiyane. They recovered two pistols, four cellphones and a tablet in their possession. Suspects were then arrested. Intensive investigation including the ballistic report on the recovered firearms positively linked them to the murder.”
