Five suspects were arrested and more than 28 000 cellphone accessories and clothing items were seized when various law enforcement units intensified operations targeting non compliance in the Durban Central Business District on Wednesday.
KwaZulu Natal police spokesperson, Sergeant Thenjiswa Ngcobo, said the multi disciplinary operation brought together members of the Provincial Counterfeit, Contraband and Illicit Goods Unit, eThekwini District police, the Border Management Authority, Metro Police, Customs officials and Public Order Policing.
“KwaZulu Natal Provincial Counterfeit, Contraband and Illicit Goods Unit, eThekwini District police together with Border Management Authority, Metro Police, Customs and Public Order Policing conducted a non compliance goods, illicit and counterfeit goods operation at Durban CBD on Wednesday, 25 February,” said Ngcobo.

The operation yielded positive results when police arrested five suspects for contravention of the Immigration Act, contravention of the Customs and Excise Act, as well as contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act.
Police also confiscated 28 400 cellphone accessories and clothing items believed to be counterfeit or illegally imported.
Authorities said operations aimed at curbing the sale of illicit and counterfeit goods will continue in the CBD and other identified hotspots to ensure compliance with the law and to protect legitimate businesses.
