An alleged drunk driver was fatally injured when the vehicle he was driving overturned causing injury to his occupants and claiming his own life on Tuesday on Ndwedwe Road.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) medics responded to the overturned vehicle after a taxi drove to the RUSA headquarters and reported the overturned vehicle.

RUSA boss, Prem Balram, said, “Reaction officers and paramedics were dispatched to the location and found the vehicle lying on its roof. Three of the injured were stabilised on scene and transported to hospital. According to the passengers, the driver was under the influence of liquor and had been drinking excessively prior to driving. The fourth injured passenger was a hitchhiker picked up by the driver on-route from Hazelmere.”

Balram, added, “The festive season is drawing close and we need motorists to be vigilant and adhere to the rules of the road as the roadway is going to be hectic with holiday-makers. Currently, there are too many fatalities on the road and drivers need to take cognisance of this and drive safely to ensure the safety of all road users.”
