Tragedy rocked the Phoenix community yet again after the body of a nine-year-old boy was retrieved from the stream, next to the Rydalvale Sports Ground on Sunday.
Phoenix SAPS communications officer, Cpt L Naidoo, said, “Police divers from Durban Search and Rescue, members from the Durban K9 Search and Rescue and Metro Police Search and Rescue were called out to recover the body of Sanele Msomi. The victim drowned while he was swimming with friends. K9 Ghost indicated an area following, which the body was recovered from a depth of two metres and handed over to Phoenix SAPS members on scene.”
“An inquest docket has been opened and is under investigation.”
It is alleged that the deceased boy hailed from Dube Village in Inanda. K9 Ghost was integral in sniffing out the body of slain Sydenham boy Miguel Louw ((9) who was found buried in a shallow grave in the dense bushes along Longbury Drive, last month.
“We sympathise with the family of the deceased boy. We urge parents to ensure that their children are supervised at all times by responsible adults. Children must be warned not to wander far from home.
“There have been too many tragedies that have claimed the lives of minors and we need these children to be safe and protected,” said Cpt Naidoo. The drowning of the boy elicited strong response from members of the public after it was reported on social media.
One comment posted said, “Rip n condolences to the family. But what was he doing there in the 1st place. Also no use in passing the buck on to others. He pbly died before emergency services reached him.” (sic)
“What was the child doing there in the 1st place? RIP,” (sic) read another comment. Whilst a Facebook user shared, “Actually, this should be further investigated. Did the child accidentally drown there? Or is there foul play involved? I’ll tell you why I’m asking this. That river is generally too SHALLOW for a person to drown in – even a child…” (sic)
