Durban football fans were treated to a thrilling Sunday afternoon at Moses Mabhida Stadium as Kaizer Chiefs clinched a vital 1–0 victory over Zesco United in their CAF Confederation Cup Group D encounter, sending waves of excitement through the stands.
The win saw Amakhosi surge to second place in the group, keeping their continental ambitions firmly on track and giving Durban supporters plenty to cheer about as the famous stadium once again came alive with song, colour and passion.
Chiefs showed early intent, with head coach Nasreddine Nabi making a few changes to the side that faced Marumo Gallants midweek, while keeping a solid core that included goalkeeper Brandon Petersen and defenders Aiden McCarthy and Zitha Kwinika. The changes paid dividends almost immediately as the Glamour Boys struck within the opening quarter of an hour.
A slick one-touch move between Flavio Da Silva and Mfundo Vilakazi carved open the Zesco defence, releasing Glodly Lilepo down the right. The winger made no mistake, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner to hand Chiefs the lead and send the Moses Mabhida crowd into raptures. It marked Lilepo’s second goal in as many matches, underlining his growing influence in the competition.

Zesco United were not without their moments and came close to equalising midway through the first half. A powerful header from Amine Hiver forced Petersen into a superb reflex save, before the Chiefs shot-stopper was called into action again, producing a one-handed stop to deny Kabaso Chongo and keep his side in front.
Chiefs could have doubled their advantage before the break. Da Silva blazed over from close range after another dangerous delivery from Lilepo, while Vilakazi rattled the woodwork with a fierce free-kick from a tight angle, the ball ricocheting back into play as the home supporters rose to their feet.
The second half saw Chiefs maintain their attacking intent, although clear chances were harder to come by. Zesco pushed forward with greater urgency, testing the Amakhosi defence and again calling Petersen into action, notably from a Luka Mutoshi effort that was tipped over the crossbar.
Despite late pressure from the Zambian side, Chiefs held their nerve, showing composure and discipline in the closing stages as both teams searched for decisive moments. In the end, it was the early strike that separated the sides, sealing a crucial victory for the Soweto giants.
As the final whistle blew, the celebrations echoed around Moses Mabhida Stadium, with Durban fans savouring a hard-fought continental win. For Kaizer Chiefs, it was a performance full of heart and resilience — and one that keeps their CAF Confederation Cup campaign very much alive.
