The 21-year-old suspect who was arrested after allegedly fatally stabbing a 19-year-old in Welbedacht was denied bail in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 1 August.

Kyle Premlall was allegedly stabbed by Lungisani Cele while on his way home from a tuckshop on 9 July. A group of residents from Welbedacht protested outside the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court for justice to be served.

Community activist and family friend, Roger Chinsamy said: “Kyle was approached by a man who demanded his cellphone. Kyle resisted and was stabbed in the chest. Neighbours helped transport him to RK Khan hospital where he later died.”

Chinsamy described the teenager as “a very nice young man” and close to his family. “He and my grandson were friends. They used to attend Welbedene Secondary School and both finished matric last year. He was a very religious young person. The news of his death was devastating. The family and community want justice to be served,” he said.

Chatsworth SAPS communications officer, Captain Cheryl Pillay said a relative who had witnessed the stabbing flagged down police, alerting the officers of the suspect’s whereabouts. “Cst Shezi immediately chased after the suspect resulting in the apprehension of the suspect. The victim who was taken to a local hospital sadly succumbed to his injuries. SAPS Chatsworth is investigating a case of murder,” said Pillay.

The 21-year-old was remanded in police custody until next court appearance in September.
