The eThekwini Municipality has placed its Disaster Management, Fire and Emergency Services teams on high alert as severe thunderstorms and damaging winds are expected to affect the city on Monday, October 19.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms, valid from 1pm until 11.59pm on Monday, and a Level 2 warning for damaging winds, which remains in effect from 11am on Monday until 6.59am on Tuesday, October 20.
The forecast includes heavy downpours, excessive lightning, possible hail and southerly winds reaching speeds of up to 83km/h.
These conditions could result in localised flooding, structural damage and hazardous driving conditions.
The municipality said emergency personnel were on standby, while the Durban Metro Police Service would monitor flood-prone areas, manage traffic and close roads deemed unsafe.

Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors where possible. Motorists and pedestrians are warned never to attempt to cross flooded roads or fast-flowing water.
The municipality has also advised residents to secure loose outdoor items, move valuables above expected flood levels and stay away from beaches, rivers and the shoreline during the stormy conditions.
During lightning activity, residents should remain indoors, keep away from windows and unplug electrical appliances where possible.
Residents are urged to monitor official communication channels for weather updates and further safety advisories.
In an emergency, eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services can be contacted on 031 361 0000.
