A man accused of attempting to murder a young Chatsworth resident told the Durban Magistrate’s Court that he acted in self-defence — as his alleged victim lies in critical condition in hospital, fighting for his life.
Mahendra Ramandrah (46), a carpart salesman from Woodhurst, appeared in court yesterday on charges of attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following a violent stabbing at a Silverglen venue, Friendly 8, last Friday night.
In his bail application, Ramandrah claimed he was being attacked and had only defended himself during the altercation.
The State, however, alleges that Keith Jeremiah Govender — a 22-year-old man from Westcliff — was stabbed during an argument, while an employee at the venue was also injured trying to intervene.
Govender remains in a critical condition at Chatsmed Hospital, where doctors are battling to stabilise him after he sustained severe head injuries.

Family spokesperson Nicole Boodhun said the family is devastated but holding onto hope.
“Keith is fighting for his life. The medical bills are rising every day and we are appealing to the public to help us support his recovery,” she said.
The family has launched a fundraising drive to assist with mounting hospital costs.

The court heard that the incident stemmed from an altercation that escalated into violence, leaving two people wounded.
Ramandrah remains in custody and is expected to reappear in court today as bail proceedings continue.
