Helicopter pilot and Head of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), Prem Balram, was awarded the prestigious Cross Bravery Award at the KZN Gender-Based Violence 2025 Gala held at The Square in Umhlanga on Saturday night.

Balram leads a team of highly skilled Reaction Officers and paramedics who respond to emergencies across KwaZulu-Natal, utilising helicopters, medical rescue, and response vehicles to provide critical assistance to people in life-threatening situations. His leadership has been instrumental in numerous high-risk operations, including the rescue of kidnapped victims, the apprehension of rape and murder suspects, and the exposure of sexual abuse cases linked to GBV. Many of these interventions have resulted in arrests that led to life sentences or lengthy prison terms for perpetrators.
