Following years of safety concerns at the busy intersection of Chris Hani and Effingham Roads, the eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) has announced plans to implement new signage and markings to address the issues. The intersection has been a hotspot for accidents due to heavy traffic and drivers making illegal manoeuvres.
Ward 34 Councillor Andrew Akkers recently met with ETA officials to discuss residents’ concerns. A major issue he raised was drivers making U-turns from the northbound fast lane, which causes traffic and endangers other road users. Akkers explained: “They are required to enter the traffic circle from the left lane, go past Effingham Road, enter the circle, join the traffic on Effingham Road before using the traffic lights. It should be simple, however people are determined to take the shortest route which is an illegal u-turn from the right lane which frustrates and endangers other road users.”

Akkers is hopeful that new signage and markings will be implemented as a matter of urgency. He also raised concerns about taxis constantly stopping outside the post office and obstructing the Church Road turn. He believes that taxi drivers have a duty to obey road rules to ensure safety for everyone. The councillor further urged taxi bosses to educate their drivers to avoid accidents and fines.
In response to the issues, the ETA confirmed that a “no U-turn” sign will be added on the north side of the Chris Hani intersection. Additionally, lane arrows will be added to the far right lane to indicate straight-only movement. The ETA did not provide an explanation for why it is unable to install advance warning signs.
To address the taxi issue, the department stated that a “no stopping” line and sign will be installed to prevent taxis from blocking Church Road. The traffic circle will also be repainted with a “no stopping” line and a new sign will be installed.
